So what exactly is Mini LED?

At present, the Mini LED we are discussing is not a completely new display technology, but an improved solution as a backlight source for liquid crystal displays, which can be understood as an upgrade of backlight technology.

Most LCD TVs use LED (Light Emitting Diode) as the backlight, while Mini LED TVs use Mini LED, a smaller light source than traditional LEDs. The width of the Mini LED is approximately 200 microns (0.008 inches), which is one-fifth of the standard LED size used in LCD panels.

Due to their small size, they can be more distributed across the entire screen. When there is enough LED backlight in a screen, the brightness control, color gradient, and other aspects of the screen can be controlled well enough, thus providing better image quality.

And a true Mini LED TV uses Mini LED directly as pixels instead of backlight. Samsung released a 110 inch Mini LED TV on CES 2021, which will be launched in March, but it is difficult to see such high-end products appearing in most households.

We have already seen at this year’s CES that TCL has released the “ODZero” Mini LED TV. In fact, TCL was also the first manufacturer to launch Mini LED TVs. LG’s QNED TVs launched on CES and Samsung’s Neo QLED TVs also use Mini LED backlight technology.
